Prescribed pile burning plans for Tuesday
Flagstaff, AZ – Pending favorable conditions tomorrow, Coconino NF fire managers plan to conduct pile burns on two projects, three different locations.
Eastside Project – 5 acres located at the southern base of Mt Elden, and 20 acres off of old Walnut Canyon Rd, southeast of Country Club. These are smaller piles, stacked by hand, and should be completely consumed before the day’s end. Smoke will be noticeable in the immediate area, residual smoke will be minimal.
Mogollon Rim Miscellaneous Piles – 10 acres of hand piles located south of Hwy 87, east of Blue Ridge Reservoir. Smoke will disperse to the north and little residual smoke is expected overnight.
Fire managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.
Prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
