Kaibab National Forest Prepares for Prescribed Burn
on Tusayan Ranger District

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers are requesting approval from Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for prescribed burning Monday, May 3 on the Tusayan Ranger District. Depending on conditions, project areas under consideration for burning are Tusayan East (87 acres) or Tusayan South (102 acres).

The location of the Tusayan East unit is ½ mile southeast of the Tusayan Ranger Station and the location of Tusayan South is about two miles west of Highway 64, on the south end of Grand Canyon Airport. Fire specialists will determine which unit to burn depending on existing and forecasted wind, temperature, and humidity. Smoke will be visible in Tusayan and along Highway 64. Light overnight smoke may linger in Tusayan and outlying areas.

These projects are part of an ongoing effort to ensure that future fires in the area remain at a lower level of intensity, thereby protecting the community and improving forest health.

Fire managers work closely with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality during the implementation of these projects.  In our efforts to protect the community from the threat of future severe fires, we appreciate the community’s tolerance of some smoke during our prescribed burns.  For more information, please contact Punky Moore (928-635-5653).
