Award-winning Juneau trail map now available

Juneau, AK—Before you pack up the backpack, pull on your hiking books, and head out for a Juneau area trail, be sure to pick up a new Juneau Area Trails map.

The Alaska Region Forest Service has just released the new map, the first updated version since 1997. Just like the previous version, the new map is printed on plastic, so it is waterproof—but the new map features a lighter-weight plastic, so it is not as bulky as the older version.

The map covers an area from Bishop’s Cove south of Juneau, north to Echo Cove, and includes the northern half of Admiralty Island, Mansfield Penninsula and Point Retreat. It features new trails as well as some trail changes. Members of Juneau’s Trail Mix group assisted in gathering Global Positioning System data for the map, so trail positions printed on the map are highly accurate. The map also includes hill shading, another new feature.

The map, which was designed at the Alaska Regional Office, won first prize in two categories at the national Bureau of Land Management/U.S. Forest Service Geospatial 2009 Conference held in Salt Lake City April 27-May 1. Judges chose the map for first place in Cartographic Design, Content, Graphics and Presentation. The map also won People's Choice for Cartography by popular vote of conference attendees.

The new Juneau Area Trails Map is available for $10 at the Juneau Ranger District, Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, and the Regional Office in the Federal Building in downtown Juneau during regular business hours.
