Contact: USDA Office of Communications (202) 720-4623 Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to Give Keynote Remarks on the Future of American Agriculture at National Farmers Union 114th Anniversary Convention WASHINGTON, Mar. 6, 2016 – Tomorrow, Mar. 7, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will deliver keynote remarks on innovation and the future of American agriculture at the National Farmers Union (NFU) 114th Anniversary Convention in Minneapolis. Since 2009, USDA has worked to diversify American agriculture and strengthen rural economies by making transformative investments in new farmers, innovation and infrastructure, and local food systems. Over the past seven years, the Department has provided about 237,000 direct and guaranteed farm ownership and operating loans totaling $33.3 billion to agricultural entrepreneurs in need – 80 percent of which have gone to beginning farmers and ranchers and socially disadvantaged producers. In order to continue this progress, USDA has allotted an additional $5.6 billion for programs serving new and beginning farmers and ranchers through 2017. Taking these steps now will ensure rural communities remain places where all businesses, farm and non-farm alike, can prosper for future generations. Monday, Mar. 7, 2016 WHAT: WHERE: Members of the media who wish to attend should email Adriane.Brown@xxxxxxxxxxx to RSVP.
