NATIONAL MEDIA CALL: Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene to Announce SNAP Employment & Training Center of Excellence with Seattle Jobs Initiative

WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2015 – TODAY, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will be joined by U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene and Seattle Jobs Initiative Executive Director John Kim for a national media call announcing a new effort to strengthen employment and training programs for SNAP participants across the country.

While the economy is improving, many Americans continue to need support as they get back on their feet. More than half of SNAP households with at least one able-bodied adult are working families, and 60 percent of SNAP participants are children, senior citizens, or persons with disabilities. SNAP helps many hard-working families put food on the table, while the SNAP Employment and Training programs help people gain education and skills needed in today’s labor market.

Seattle Jobs Initiative has a long-standing history of providing technical assistance to SNAP participants and was a critical partner in building Washington State’s Basic Food Employment and Training, a leading regional program.

As part of the Obama Administration’s ongoing commitment to job-driven training, USDA is committed to promoting best practices proven to help SNAP recipients gain the skills they need to be successful in a competitive job market and achieve long-term economic self-sufficiency. In addition to this announcement, USDA has invested $200 million in developing innovative strategies to help SNAP recipients get back to work and become gainfully employed.
