Media Advisory No. 0085.15 Contact: Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to Name Winners of U.S. Tall Wood Building Prize Competition WASHINGTON, Sep. 16, 2015 – ON THURSDAY, Sept. 17, in New York City, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and officials from the Softwood Lumber Board and the Binational Softwood Lumber Council will announce the winners of the U.S. Tall Wood Building Prize Competition—a historic effort to bring tall, sustainable and design-efficient wood buildings to the United States. The Tall Wood Building Prize Competition seizes upon innovation to promote rural economic development and mitigate climate change and wildfire impacts, while also supporting sustainable forestry. The two winning design teams will be granted a combined $3 million in funding to support the development of tall wood buildings in the United States. For single, multi-family and mixed residential construction, wood typically costs less—economically and environmentally—while delivering more in terms of its beauty, versatility and performance. It can be used as a low carbon alternative to steel, masonry and concrete in many applications. Innovative new technologies and building systems have enabled longer wood spans, taller walls and higher buildings (more 80 feet in height), and continue to expand the possibilities for wood use in construction. The Secretary will discuss the rural economic and environmental benefits of tall wood structures. Reporters are welcome to join and record the event. Thursday, September 17, 2015 WHAT: WHERE: RSVP: #
