Obama Administration Officials Announce New Investments in the Biofuels Industry

WASHINGTON, June 29, 2012 – ON MONDAY, July 2, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Deputy Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change Heather Zichal will host a conference call to announce that funding is available for commercial scale advanced drop-in biofuels both through the Defense Production Act and the Department of Energy.

This announcement will include new funding available to pursue new innovations in biofuels technologies, increase production of U.S. biofuels, and strengthen American energy security.

In his Blueprint for a Secure Energy Future released in March 2011, President Obama set a goal of reducing oil imports by one-third by 2025 and laid out an all-of-the-above energy plan to achieve that goal by developing domestic oil and gas energy resources, increasing energy efficiency, and speeding development of biofuels and other alternatives. As part of this all-of-the above approach the Administration is focused on expanding domestic energy sources. One element of the plan was a direction to the Navy, USDA and DOE to collaborate to speed the development of “drop-in” biofuel substitutes for diesel and jet fuel.
