Media Advisory: Food Industry Innovation to be Highlighted by USDA at the Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting
WASHINGTON, June 26, 2012 – Dr. Robert Post, Deputy Director of USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP), will present “Making the Case for Cutting Calories” on Thursday, June 28, at the Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting & Food Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Post’s presentation will be part of the “Cut the Calories, Not the Profit” panel session which will also feature presentations by representatives from Birds Eye, Darden Restaurants, and General Mills.
The panel will discuss how the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the accompanying MyPlate messages “Enjoy your food, but eat less” and “Avoid over-sized portions” are prompting innovations from diverse sectors of the food industry.
“Is the food industry the problem or the solution in providing healthy food?” asked Dr. Post. “If we are to feed millions of consumers both in America and abroad, then I see the food industry and its adaptability as the only solution.”
Dr. Post’s presentation will focus on how different sectors of the industry are collaborating to bring forth advances in food formulation, technology, and marketing in order to promote healthier choices without sacrificing profitability.
