Media Advisory: USDA to Host Conference Call on New ERS Report that Examines Whether Healthy Foods Are Really More Expensive
WASHINGTON, May 15, 2012—TOMORROW, May 16, USDA Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Kevin Concannon and Dr. Andrea Carlson from USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) will host a conference call with media and stakeholders to discuss a report to be released that day: Are Healthy Foods Really More Expensive? It Depends On How You Measure the Price. Most Americans consume diets that do not meet federal dietary recommendations. A common explanation is that healthier foods are more expensive than less healthy foods. The authors compare prices of healthy and less-healthy foods using three different measures: the price per calorie, the price per unit of edible weight, and the price of an average portion. Call in and find what the authors concluded.
