Media Advisory: Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to Highlight How Biobased Products are Bringing Back Manufacturing, Creating Jobs in Wisconsin
Vilsack to tour Virent’s bioproducts facility
WASHINGTON, April 18, 2012 – TODAY, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will highlight how manufacturing products from biobased materials can create jobs across the country and is part of a broader biobased economy helping support President Obama’s “all-of-the-above approach to American energy. Vilsack will visit Virent, a Madison, Wisconsin company that is working to replace packaging materials previously produced from fossil fuels with materials made entirely from plant-based feedstocks. Virent recently signed agreements with the Coca-Cola Company; Virent’s biobased chemical Paraxylene will allow for a 100 percent renewable, recyclable bottle. USDA previously provided funding to help Virent conduct research on high-value chemical production from biodiesel-derived glycerol.
