Media Advisory: Agriculture Secretary Vilsack to Highlight Efforts to Combat High Gas Prices in Kansas City, Deliver Landon Lecture at Kansas State University

WASHINGTON, April 5, 2012 – On Monday, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will travel to Kansas City to highlight how renewable fuels are giving consumers more choices at the pump and helping to promote  American-made energy. Secretary Vilsack will host an event at an area gas station to discuss the Administration’s all-of-the-above strategy to American energy and how biofuels are helping displace foreign oil used in gasoline. He will highlight EPA’s recent approval of registration of ethanol for use in making gasoline that contains up to 15 percent ethanol - known as E15. Registration of ethanol to make E15 is a significant step toward its production, sale, and use in model year 2001 and newer gasoline-fueled cars and light trucks.  To enable widespread use of E15, the Obama Administration has set a goal to help fueling station owners install 10,000 blender pumps over the next 5 years.

On Tuesday, Secretary Vilsack will present Kansas State University's spring 2012 Landon Lecture on Why America Needs Agriculture. The prestigious Landon Lecture Series began in 1996 and is hosted in honor of Governor Alfred M. Landon. Three to five of the country's leading personalities appear on the Landon Lecture platform each academic year and are drawn from the public arena of world-renowned politicians, journalists, cabinet members and other prominent figures involved in current public issues. The lectures are given in the university's McCain Auditorium and are attended by K-State students, faculty and alumni, as well as the general public.
