UPDATED: Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan to Highlight Local and Regional Food Systems at Federal Reserve Bank Conference

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2, 2012- TOMORROW, Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will keynote ‘The Many Faces of Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food: A Local/Regional Food System Conference’ hosted at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Merrigan will be joined by organizations, state and federal agencies, institutions and others involved with agriculture and economic development. Merrigan will highlight the opportunities to learn about successful models, resources, strategies and opportunities for supporting, cultivating and growing local/regional food systems in the Midwest, including about available support from USDA agencies.

Merrigan will discuss the administration’s strategy to strengthen the U.S. economy, put more people back to work, and to put more money in the pockets of working Americans. USDA's 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' initiative emphasizes the need for a fundamental and critical reconnection between producers and consumers. The effort builds on the 2008 Farm Bill, which provided increases and flexibility in USDA programs in an effort to revitalize rural economies by supporting local and regional food systems. 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' is helping to break down barriers that keep local food systems from thriving, create new opportunities for farmers, ranchers, consumers and rural communities, and expand access to healthy food throughout the country.
