USDA to Join Partners to Highlight Anti-Hunger Initiatives and Nutrition Assistance Efforts
Public-Private Partnerships Aim to Connect More Children and Families to Anti-Hunger Programs During the Holiday Season
WASHINGTON, Nov. 21, 2011 – TOMORROW, USDA Under Secretary Kevin Concannon and Feeding America CEO Vicki Escarra will host a media conference call on Tuesday, November 22 at 11:30 a.m. to discuss the importance of federal nutrition assistance programs, and the close partnership between USDA and its advocacy partners, in fighting hunger, as the nation enters the season of giving.
The most recent data shows that in 2010, nearly 49 million people in the United States lived in households that were unable to put adequate food on the table at times during the year. The Obama administration has pledged to combat food insecurity by ensuring all Americans – especially children – have access to a healthy diet, whether at home or at school. Both the nutrition programs and the emergency feeding network have important roles in achieving this goal, and the discussion will highlight both current partnerships and potential areas to enhance these efforts.
