Agriculture Secretary Vilsack to Host Media Conference to Announce New Effort to Prevent Foodborne Illnesses

 

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13, 2011 – TODAY, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will host a national media conference call to announce a significant food safety advancement to protect Americans from foodborne illnesses that can result from contaminated meat, poultry and egg products. Under Secretary for Food Safety Dr. Elisabeth Hagen, USDA’s top food safety official, will join Secretary Vilsack during this media conference call.

 

Under President Obama’s Food Safety Working Group, USDA is committed to modernizing food safety and building a food safety system that will meet the challenges posed by a global food supply in the 21st century. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that one out of every six Americans gets sick each year from foodborne illnesses—with 128,000 hospitalized and 3,000 dying from such ailments.
