USDA Official to Host Media Conference Call on Critical Improvements to the School Nutrition Environment as Kids Head Back to School

Under Secretary Kevin Concannon Highlights Key Reforms in the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act to Improve School Meal Quality

WASHINGTON, August 15, 2011—TODAY. USDA Under Secretary Kevin Concannon will host a national conference to discuss key reforms enacted through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that will improve the nutritional quality of school meals this year and strengthen the school environment for our nation’s schoolchildren.

Improving child nutrition is the focal point of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed by President Obama in December 2010.  The Act allows USDA, for the first time in over 30 years, the chance to make real reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs by improving the critical nutrition and hunger safety net for millions of children, and help a new generation win the future by having healthier lives. Under Secretary Concannon will discuss the many HHFKA provisions in place and in development this school year that will greatly improve the diets of schoolchildren across the country.
