FEATURE – MOVIE STAR AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ADVOCATE FOR FEEDING PROGRAMS

INTRO: Child feeding programs got a boost from an Oscar-winning actor, the Agriculture Secretary and the Governor of Virginia. The USDA’s Bob Ellison has more. (1:52)

MOVIE STAR JEFF BRIDGES JOINED AGRICULTURE SECRETARY TOM VILSACK AND VIRGINIA GOVERNOR BOB MCDONNELL AT A GRADE SCHOOL OUTSIDE OF WASHINGTON D-C TO SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN.

Jeff Bridges, Actor: We all need each other to get this job done. We’re gonna need government leaders like Secretary Vilsack, Governor McDonnell here and teachers, of course, and principals. We’re going to need actors and entertainers, too and you kids! And together we’re going to end child hunger right here in Virginia and everywhere else in America.

Tom Vilsack, Agriculture Secretary: As the governor knows, and he’s a great advocate for our efforts here, he knows that in Virginia there are two hundred eighteen thousand who are at risk of not getting enough nutrition. And that’s why the summer feeding programs are such an important component of our effort to make sure that no kid goes hungry in Virginia or across the United States.

Gov. Bob McDonnell, R-Virginia: If you don’t have a good meal you’re going to be struggling to focus when it comes to school, you’re going to be hungry and not focused on having that dream to be a baseball player, or a governor or an actor, but you’re going to be worried about your stomach and that’s not good.

THE EVENT LAUNCHED THE VIRGINIA NO KID HUNGRY CAMPAIGN TO CONNECT VIRGINIA'S CHILDREN TO NUTRITION PROGRAMS. AN EFFORT ADVOCATES HOPE IS REPEATED NATIONALLY.

Bridges: One in four of our kids are hungry in this country and it doesn’t have to be that way. We have enough food. We know how to end it.

Vilsack: If these youngsters are going to compete economically and be at the top of their game they’ve got to be great learners. They can’t do that if they’re hungry. So when you reduce opportunities for feeding programs during the summer or during the school year, you’re basically making it more difficult for these kids to be at the top of their game.

Bob Ellison, USDA: U-S-D-A’s summer food service program helps to make sure that children get the nutrition they need even when school is out for the summer. In Arlington, Virginia for the U-S Department of Agriculture, I’m Bob Ellison.
