Agriculture Deputy Secretary Merrigan to Visit Michigan State University Today to Highlight Bioenergy Research Grants
WASHINGTON, April 20, 2011 – TODAY, Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan will visit Michigan State University to highlight research grants awarded to spur production of bioenergy and biobased products that will lead to the development of sustainable regional systems and help create jobs. Merrigan will meet with energy stakeholders and leaders and tour the Cellulosic Ethanol Pretreatment research lab and AFEX technology pilot plant.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded three grants to Michigan State University to support research into 2nd generation biofuels to help meet the Energy Independence and Security Act goal of 36 billion gallons per year of biofuels by 2022.
