FEATURE – USDA RAMPS UP CONSERVATION STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM

INTRO:  The U-S-D-A says the coming years will present a challenge to farmers as they simultaneously try to help the environment and feed a growing world population. The USDA’s Bob Ellison has more.  (1:29)

U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE CONSERVATION PROGRAMS ARE DESIGNED TO HELP PRODUCERS PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT WHILE HELPING THEM STAY IN FARMING. U-S-D-A NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION CHIEF DAVE WHITE SAYS GROWING ENOUGH FOOD FOR AN INCREASING WORLD POPULATION WHILE PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT WILL PRESENT SPECIAL CHALLENGES.

Dave White, USDA NRCS Chief: The U-N, United Nations, is projecting something like a two point three billion increase in the amount of people that will be on this Earth in another four decades. And they’re also estimating that to feed all these new people is going to require a seventy percent increase in our productivity. It’s going to be a huge challenge for America’s farmers and ranchers. What we would like to do is make sure our ag sector stays healthy, environmentally sound and that we maintain productivity in this nation.

ONE OF THE PROGRAMS N-R-C-S OFFERS IS THE CONSERVATION STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM, OR C-S-P. IT HELPS PRODUCERS WITH NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT, WILDLIFE, AIR AND WATER ISSUES.

White: We’ve had two sign ups now, we now have twenty five million acres enrolled in that program. We’re going to do another twelve million acres this year. It’s going to be the largest conservation program in the nation by this time next year.

N-R-C-S IS ACCEPTING C-S-P APPLICATIONS FOR THE TWENTY ELEVEN EVALUATION AND RANKING PERIOD. THE RANKING PERIOD SIGN UP DEADLINE IS JANUARY SEVENTH, TWENTY ELEVEN. IN WASHINGTON D-C FOR THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE I’M BOB ELLISON.
