USDA and HHS to Hold Media Briefing on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s Report
WASHINGTON, June 14, 2010 – TODAY, the Department of Agriculture’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will host an embargoed media conference call to discuss the release of the Report of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010. Robert Post, Deputy Director of USDA’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion and Penelope Slade-Sawyer, HHS’ Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, will provide information regarding the purpose, process, development and content of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
On Tuesday, June 15th, the Advisory Report of the Dietary Guidelines will be published for a 30-day period for public comment. Therefore, information discussed on the media conference call is embargoed until Tuesday, June 15th at 10 am.
The Advisory Report of the Dietary Guidelines is part of the multi-year process and the final 2010 guidelines are expected to be released at the end of this year. First published in 1980, the Dietary Guidelines are mandated by Congress to be reviewed, updated and released by USDA and HHS every five years. The Dietary Guidelines contain the latest, science-based nutritional and dietary guidance for the general public. They are the foundation for Federal nutrition education and promotion programs, as well as the basis for the food assistance programs. For more information, visit www.dietaryguidelines.gov.
