AGRICULTURE SECRETARY VILSACK TO VISIT DC CENTRAL KITCHEN ON FRIDAY

Vilsack to Mark the First Annual 'National Day of Service and Remembrance' - Highlight 'The Peoples Garden' and Feeding the Hungry

WASHINGTON, September 10, 2009 - TOMORROW, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will take part in the first annual 'National Day of Service and Remembrance' by visiting the DC Central Kitchen. Vilsack will deliver fresh produce from 'The People's Garden' and Farmer's Market at USDA headquarters and highlight the importance of DC Central Kitchen's mission.

President Obama has called on all Americans to make volunteerism and community service part of their daily lives and the life of the nation through the United We Serve initiative. Congress designated September 11, 2009 as the first annual National Day of Service and Remembrance. The day is to serve as a capstone to service events in preceding months, with the hope that a spirit of service will continue to grow in the hearts and minds of the American people well beyond this time.

The President's call to participate in this program has focused on four key areas where everyone can have a continuing impact in their community: education, health, energy and the environment and community renewal. All Americans have been encouraged to create new service projects, find service projects in their communities and to share stories about projects that are making a difference, by visiting www.serve.gov.
