LEARN HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR HARVEST AND FEAST ON RATATOUILLE THIS FRIDAY

WASHINGTON, Sept. 1, 2009 - Why grow one plant when you could grow three simultaneously and produce three times as much food while replenishing the nutrients in your soil? Did you know that the more often you pick zucchini the more will grow? From companion planting to harvesting your vegetables, learn easy and effective strategies for getting more for your buck from your garden on Sept. 4. This workshop was cancelled last week due to inclement weather.

USDA is holding a "Healthy Garden" workshop series on the National Mall in 'The People's Garden' every Friday through Sept. 25. There are interactive demonstrations and information for area residents and tourists about practical gardening skills at any level. Each week will feature a different topic.

This week's "Chef in the Garden" series will feature Share Our Strength's Chef Carlton Crockett & students from the International Culinary School at the Art Institute preparing a tasty
Ratatouille. The "Chef in the Garden" series provides cooking demonstrations with your garden favorites.

The "Healthy Garden" Workshop Series schedule and topics include:

Sept. 11 - Making and Using Compost
Sept. 18 - Choosing and Using Fertilizers
Sept. 25 - Fall Maintenance: Preparing Your Garden for Next Season
