AGRICULTURE SECRETARY TOM VILSACK TO VISIT ILLINOIS

WASHINGTON, June 28, 2009 - Today and on Monday, June 29, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will participate in a series of events in Chicago, Ill.

Sunday, June 28, 2009
1:00 p.m.

WHAT:
Agriculture Secretary Vilsack will address the Rainbow PUSH Coalition's 38th Annual Conference and discuss USDA's efforts to implement the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to create jobs and rejuvenate the economy in communities throughout the country as well as his commitment to promote civil rights and equal access at USDA and for employees and customers. Vilsack will also participate in a panel discussion with Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr., Cong. Danny Davis (IL-7), Cong. Hank Johnson (GA-4), Mayor Virg Bernaro of Lansing Mich., Mayor Eugene Grant of Seat Pleasant, Md., Commissioner Daisy Lynum of Orlando, Fla., Georgia State Representative Calvin Smyre, USDA Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Joe Leonard. The panel will be moderated by Prof. Charles Ogletree of Harvard Law School.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack will participate in the Obama Administration's 'United We Serve' initiative by volunteering at a Summer Food Service Program location, where he will help serve lunches to children. USDA's Summer Food Service Program provides breakfast and lunch to over 2 million children. The 'United We Serve' initiative is designed make volunteerism and community service part of the daily lives of all Americans in order to help build a new foundation of service, one community at a time.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack will participate in the Obama Administration's 'United We Serve' initiative by visiting the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Already this year, the Greater Chicago Food Depository has received more than $5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from USDA to enable it to provide healthy, nutritious meals to families throughout the greater Chicago area.
