JOHANNS APPOINTS NINE MEMBERS TO RESEARCH ADVISORY BOARD

MOULTRIE, Ga., Oct. 18, 2005 - Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns today appointed nine new members to the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics (NAREEE) Advisory Board.

The  board advises USDA and land-grant colleges and universities on top national priorities and policies for food and agricultural research, education, extension and economics.  Board members meet with congress, and hold stakeholder listening sessions.  Board members also review draft guidance for competitive-grant programs, give advice on the scientific peer review process for national programs, review agricultural REE activities for relevance to national priorities and adequacy of funding.

The NAREEE Advisory Board will hold a public meeting in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 18-20, and a listening session of its Specialty Crop Committee on Oct. 20-21.  The meeting and listening session are open to the public.

The board is made up of 31 members, each of which represents a specific category of U.S. agricultural stakeholders as outlined in 1996 and 2002 farm bill legislation. Each new member serves a 3-year appointment, effective October 2005.  Terms for members overlap, so every year a third of the board is newly appointed.  This year's appointments are:

1.  Category B. Farm Cooperatives:  Jean-Mari Peltier, President and CEO, National Council of Farmer Cooperatives (Washington, D.C.)

2.  Category D. Plant Commodity Producers:  Dave Hilferty, Wheat Farmer and President, Nebraska Wheat Growers Association (Nebraska)

3.  Category G. National Aquaculture Association:   John "Randy" MacMillan, President, National Aquaculture Association, and Vice President, Research & Environmental Affairs, Clear Springs Foods, Inc. (Idaho)

4.  Category J. National Food Science Organization:  Daryl B. Lund, Past President, Institute of Food Technologists; Executive Director, North Central Regional Association of State Agricultural Experiment Station Directors, University of Wisconsin-Madison; and Professor of Food Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison (Wisconsin)

5.  Category L. National Nutritional Science Society:  Marianne S. Edge, Former President, American Dietetic Association; and President, MSE & Associates, LLC (Kentucky)

6.  Category M. 1862 Land-Grant Colleges and Universities:  Thomas J. Fretz, (Reappointment); Executive Director, Northeastern Regional Association of State Agricultural Experiment Station Directors; and Former Dean, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Maryland, College Park (Maryland)

7.  Category S. Member of Scientific Community Not Closely Associated with Agriculture:  Martin A. Apple, President, Council of Scientific Society Presidents (Washington, DC)

8.  Category CC. Research Agency of the Federal Government Other than USDA:  Aristides A. Patrinos, Associate Director of Science for Biological and Environmental Research, U.S. Department of Energy (Maryland)

9.  Category EE. National Organizations Directly Concerned with Agricultural Research, Education, and Extension:  Laurien J. Unnevehr, Former President, American Agricultural Economics Association; and Professor, Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois)
