        VENEMAN NAMES MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES TO THE
        NATIONAL TOBACCO ADVISORY COMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 2004--Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman today announced the appointments of 14 members and their alternates to the National Advisory Committee for Tobacco Inspection Services.  The committee members and alternates will serve a two-year term ending August 24, 2006.

"I am pleased that these individuals have agreed to lend their expertise and time on this committee," said Veneman.

The committee advises the secretary on the level of services needed to provide USDA inspection for the major types of tobacco and on fees to charge for these services.

Newly appointed members, followed by their alternates, are: Jon Wallace Deas, Jennings, Fla., and Michael Franklin Schafer, Madison, Ind.; William Daniel Andrews, Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and Shirley Stuart Pierce, Ahoskie, N.C.; Philip David Duncan, Apex, N.C., and Margie Humphrey Spivey, Lumberton, N.C.; Lee Morton Jernigan, Dunn, N.C., and Phillip Lee Hudson, Newton Grove, N.C.; Ronald Jay Rudd, Moscow, Ohio, and Kent Douglas Bauman, Otway, Ohio; English Warren Dixon, Aynor, S.C., and William DuPree Atkinson, Mullins, S.C.

Reappointed members, followed by their alternates, are:  David H. Lee, Alma, Ga., and James Emory Tate, Denton, Ga.; Daniel F. Ebelhar, Owensboro, Ky., John Frederick Giesecke, Horse Cave, Ky.; Frances Ann Brown, Olmstead, Ky., and David Allen Chappell, Owenton, Ky.; Albert William Pedigo, Fountain Run, Ky., and Hobert David McGlone, Grayson, Ky.; Charles Murray Harden, Windsor, N.C., and Richard Paul Renegar, Harmony, N.C.; Leland McKinley Simmons, Newport, N.C., and William Edward Sugg III, Snow Hill, N.C.; Carl Hobert Bolton, Tazewell, Tenn., and Samuel Clarence Bryant, Springfield, Tenn.; Richard Louis Sutherland, Elks Creek, Va., and Cynthia Kaye Compton, Honaker, Va.

Appointees can serve a maximum of three 2-year terms as members and alternates.

Section 5 of the Tobacco Inspection Act of 1935, as amended by the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981, Public law 97.35, requires the establishment of a national advisory committee for tobacco producers of each kind of tobacco.  Established in March 1982, the committee consists of tobacco producers' representing all U.S. tobacco production areas and meets at the secretary's request.
