I think that might be the exact issue. tde doesn't bother setting that up because systemd normally does (which Slackware doesn't use) and also the shell games in tdeinit (tdm -> starttde -> tdeinit wrapper -> tdeinit) are probably cleaning up the environment at some point, keeping my modifications from reaching the actual session environment.
