The format is set in Settings/Configure kmail/Misc

In my case, it's maildir, and I do have the compact option in the menu.

Not sure, but I think if you copy your maildir messages in the mail directory 
(~/.trinity/share/apps/kmail/mail) kmail should (re)create it's index files. 
If your messages are allready in directories, I would create the 
corresponding directories in kmail and copy the files in those.

When I setup a new machine I usually copy the mail directory from my main 
machine (plus the kmail files from .trinity/share/config).

Maybe the import option can be used, but I can't test.
