First, I don't know if this applies to R Pi, but make sure that you have uninstalled destop-base and replaced it with desktop-base-trinity. It may be that a Pi doesn't use this. Second, and more likely, try running this command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity Sometimes I need to do that to set the preferred DE, and this switches it from the default installation to TDE.
