This actually works as in the X11 specs defined. The responibility for the content of the clipboard lies in the hands of the application you copy from, not the OS. When you close the application, the clipboard vcontent is gone. If you run something like klipper it works as a buffer and keeps the clipboard content even when the providing application is gone.
