I think it is a very good point/question.

I recall if I setup to ask what to do, I could select which application to
use, but it seems that it is related to the MIME types associated with the
file type in question.

After recent update it does not work. 

Another aspect of integration I am missing is the dbus to pulse
translation - for example disable screensaver when youtube video is
running, integrate audio channel into KMix ... a lot of work.

Can someone open a ticket or two in Gitea?
