Do you have sound with other programs?

I don't know Ubuntu, here on Debian you need to have pulse audio working (or 
alsa if you don't use pulse audio). Check if you have sounds in trinity 
control center for example. If yes, then your problem is with Firefox.

You can also look at what kmix (Trinity menu - Multimedia - Sound Mixer) 
reports for your sound system.
