OK, so seems the Raspi doesn't read my monitors EDID correctly (however it 
does work with the Raspbian desktop...)

Solution was to edit config.txt to contain:

hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=82
hdmi_drive=2

maybe it can be useful to someone.
