synaptic can search as a regular user or you can use "apt-cache search"
from the command line.

Better still is to do some in-depth research before installing ANYTHING.

Does TDE allow "sudo bash" from konsole?  If not what happens?

Personally I prefer to allow local root login with a gnarly password but
I block root ssh login.
