Good advice that.  GUI programs running as root is seldom a good idea.

Personally I don't use the xhost thang.  I don't mind bash running as
root but I don't even want to accidentally start some GUI program as
root and then have to clean up the mess.

apt is all you need for managing Debian packages, and your choice of
non-GUI editor for editing config files.
