Might you have some Gnome thing running or at least set? I've occasionally
found unwanted behavior attributable to some Gnome default (that I can't
get to -- is there a Gnome equivalent to KControl?), and it could be that
you have some Gnome package that forces this behavior, as if it were the
government of California.
