Brute force way to figure this out...

Let your machine sit for about 5 minutes (go to the bathroom, grab a drink, 
whatever...).

Come back, and change one of the apps to be in a static desktop.  Do nothing 
else!

Then run this on a terminal:

cd /home
find {your-user-name} -newermt $(date +%Y-%m-%d -d '1 min ago') -type f

That should tell you which file the change has been saved to.  With that you 
hopefully will be able to create a way to do the other stuff you wanted.  
Gonna be a kludge, but should work...
