I don't think that Android devices "phone home" to Google with information about your data transfers so Google can track them. Under USB storage, the computer mounting it has exclusive access to the drive while it is mounted. That's a feature for USB external hard drives, but a disadvantage for phones and cameras where people expect to still be able to access their data even when the device is mounted on the computer. The company selling them advertised it by driving a car over it to prove it could take just about anything. 40 whole megabytes. I thought I would never fill it. Back then I could fit the OS, a two dozen or more games, and data files on a single 800K floppy disk.
