You might want to review the manpages for apt-get, and maybe also dpkg (just 
in case). 

Sometimes, when it seems that some packages ought to install, but don't, I try 
adding to the apt-get command: 

sudo apt-get --allow-unauthenticated --ignore-hold install 
(There are others, but this is an example.) 

Before you just click to install, make sure that nothing essential is being 
uninstalled. You are not obliged to install whatever comes up, but you may 
find new options available that were previously hidden.
