Sometimes for me, desktop-base (or any other variants than 
desktop-base-trinity) may also need to be manually removed using 
dpkg --purge. I don't know if it applies here. 

Then run dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity and maybe also dpkg-reconfigure 
desktop-base-trinity.
