will chime in and say the same experience as I have, also with VPN (different geographical locations).

my client is Alpine though I also use Gmail's web interface.

I am also usually logged in simultaneously to two different Gmail accounts (two instances of Alpine running).

Alpine will give a warning sometimes on first start up of Alpine, something about not being wholly secure, and offers a 'yes/no' option, then it's go.
