MTP was introduced by Microsoft and, as usual, we lost the alternative on the way. As I have hardly used MTP at all, I don't know the difference. I had a feeling that mass storage let you see your phone as an external drive, while MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) onyl gave you acces to "media" (music, photos, videos) but not to the rest of the drive - maybe I'm wrong.
