Thanks, everybody! I believe that will help me solve the password problem. 

Now there only remains for me to find a suitable replacement for Firestarter, 
or to learn better how to use ufw/gufw. Like I said, to be able to see my 
connections in real time is a nice feature. Reading logs is just not the 
same; by the time I catch a bad actors, they have already made their exits.
