It seems like a rather extreme solution, but have you tried switching from
the proprietary driver to nouveau?  Or do you have one of the cards that
has performance problems under nouveau?

(Personally, I just use the proprietary driver and ignore tearing when it
occurs, but I'm much less sensitive to it than most people.)
