Reason here: iwl card overheated, iwl driver detected "some" fault and began spamming kernel log, which consumed within seconds 100% cpu time of all cores. Waiting does not help: after some minutes the mouse freezes, too. So it might be a good idea to check /var/log/messages ... oops, debian uses systemd .. well, use whatever tool is needed to see the syslog if it exists at all ...
