may be plotting my return strategy instead.

not sure how to diagnose. I see an error as follows:
'please fix 'fbdev' driver. fbdev didn't call xf86SetGamma to initialise'. no
idea how to fix it.

Gerhard, Nikolaus, how do you get '|' on a German keyboard? I can't do
a 'dmesg | less' without it. (actually the keyboard is German but I
suppose the key setup is American.)

<altgr>+"<" - "altgr"is right of space, "<" is left of "Y" - at least on keyboards.

@fbdev: most likely your graphic card is not supported. You might try MX Linux and/or Arch and see how far that'll thke you. Most likely you will not be happy at the end of the day.

thank you.

the Mediamarkt site calls it "Intel UHD Grafik 620"; I also think I'll have problems with wi-fi - can't find my note about it but it was something like "intel wifi ax200."

I'll give it a shot with MX then failing that, take it back to the store.

Windows 10 Home has become pretty bad. it will try to force you to use a Microsoft Store Account if it detects internet. and the amount of personal information it helpfully solicits unless you turn off the (many) defaults is overwhelming.
