If you run only the xserver itself, what resolution will it use?
What is mentioned about the resolution in /var/log/XOrg.0.log?
Are the display capabilities correctly detected?

On one of my machines I have a monitor connected to a 10m long VGA cable.
This has a problem detecting the capabilities of the monitor and therefore
the Xserver starts by default as 1024 × 768. I had to add lines Modeline
with higher resolution values to xorg.conf. Then everything works fine, no
matter how the monitor's capabilities are not detected.

Cheers
