Some time in the last ~5 years, some bright mind somewhere made 'localhost' an 
illegal hostname in a display manager helper program (never did figure out 
how far down into the display manager called/child path it was).  If this is 
the cause of your issue, change your hostname in ‘/etc/hostname’ 
from ‘localhost’ to something else and reboot.
