My guess is that the file isn't a RAR file at all, but some doofus has named it ".rar" because all compressed archives are RAR files, right? It might work on your friend's computer if his decompression utility is smart enough to use the correct decompressor based on the file contents, not the extension. Try deleting the ".rar" extension and then run the "file" command-line utility on it and see what it says.
