I think I found it. And just for S&G, I went thru firefoxes about:config 
restoring all the javascript options to the defaults. And its running a 
lot better now. I must have been turning off stuff I thought I was 
enabling.  So much for easy to understand english in a browser written 
by contributors from all over this ball of rock.
