I think I was to quick to confirm. In a second try the change from "normal" 
to "bold" seems to work for both "new messages" and "unread messages". Both 
gets applied immediately after clicking on "apply".

Still remaining are the double entries of "italics" (or "kursiv" with my 
German language settings) and the wrongly shown state of the setting as one 
the two "italics" options in the drop down menu after having switched 
to "bold".

And still I'm quite certain that my first change showed the erratic 
behaviour, too.
