The same steps work to set most of the default applications in TDE (and I 
think it's still the same in KDE4). However, as I mentioned, there are some 
applications that apparently cannot be set as the default by that method - 
KPDF is the one that most annoyed me, as I prefer it for my pdf reader, but 
cannot set it as the default. It is curiouser still, because both Konqueror 
and KPDF are KDE/TDE. 

If anybody has some notion why it works for some applications but not others, 
I would be interested to know.
